Soulders
using traditional Ethiopian dance to create contemporary art, which deals with tensions and challenges existing in a body that is living vibrant community life. On stage are 20 Ethiopian performers of all ages (5-70) in the height of a ceremony, a celebration of life. The simple communal celebration is becoming more and more complex as it meets modern society. Other mental layers seem to float through the body of the individuals who try to hold on to the traditional ceremony. Pairs of shoulders are shaking, even when moving away from the roots, striving to protect it against the changing environment. Then come tiredness of tradition, one more attempt to cling to it, heaviness and suffocation, detachment and loneliness, the urge to kick off the past, the search for the common which is constantly changing. The individuals undergo tiring turbulences, but the community continues to preserve the energy and the ceremony must go on.
